The Great Hall of London's Hellenic Centre began to fill at 7pm on 8
November 2011 for the annual award ceremony of the Criticos Prize.
Images of the Odyssey depicted in oil paintings, engravings and
children's books over several centuries were projected onto the walls,
reminding the audience of the age-old focus of creative endeavour on the
ancient work. Zachary Mason would go on to speak about his own creative
process in writing The Lost Books of the Odyssey and take questions
from the audience, but not before a special mention was made to the
lifetime contribution of Nikos Fokas to poetry and literature. Extracts
from his newly-published book, The Known: Collected Poems
(1981-2000), were read first in Greek and then in English by Fokas'
translator, Don Schofield.
